Over the past several years, antibiotics have been the key to getting rid of all kinds of different illnesses. They are by far the most prescribed medicine in the medical field and there are numeroustypes of antibiotics. If you are unfamiliar on what antibiotics are, then I will give you a short explanation. Basically, what they will do is kill or at least slow down the bad bacteria in your body to help get you over whatever illness you may have. They are chemicals that are produced by microorganisms; see, bugs aren’t all that bad. Whether you have a sore throat, bad cough, or even something like acne, you will be able to find an antibiotic to help cure your illness. There are so many different types of antibiotics in existence that you will have no problem in finding what you need. Let’s get into the different types of antibiotics now.
The first type of antibiotic is aminoglycoside. These are mainly used to fight infections that were created via gram-negative bacterias. Bacteria is said to be able to develop a resistance to this though; however, bacteria is able to develop resistance to just about anything. The bad side effects that can come from aminoglycoside are damage to your kidneys or ears. The main effect of aminoglycoside is that they stop the bacteria from producing proteins in your body.
The second type of antibiotic is cephalosporin. There are three different generation types of cephalosporins. The higher the generation, the larger gram-negative antimicrobial property it has. The particular late generation cephalosporins also have a greater chance of a bacteria not becoming resistant to it. This is obviously a good thing because it means that the medicine will be effective for a longer period of time.
The third type of antibiotic is fluoroquinolone. This type of antibiotic is effective against several different types of bacteria, but it is mainly utilized to treat UTI’s, respiratory infections, and skin infections. You can experience nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, or minor pain in the stomach while using fluoroquinolones. This works because it interferes with bacteria’s capability to generate DNA, so it is harder for the bacteria to be able to multiply.
The next type of antibiotic is penicillin. This was actually the first type of antibiotic discovered way back in 1929 by way of Alexander Fleming. These are mainly used to cure dental infections, respiratory infections, gonorrhea, UTI’s, and skin infections. Penicillin works by blocking the development of bacteria cell walls; eventually, the walls deteriorate, and the bacteria is killed over time because of this. Doctors consider penicillin to be extremely safe; you can get an allergic reaction at times but that is about it.
The fifth type of antibiotics is tetracycline. These were the most popular antibiotics whenever they were originally identified back in the 1940s. The most common use for tetracyclines is for upper respiratory infections, STD’s, Lyme disease, mild acne, and typhus. They are used to combat a wide amount of different bacterial infections mostly. Doxycycline and minocycline are both tetracyclines.
The last type of antibiotic is macrolide. These are used mainly to treat your gastrointestinal tract and other tract infections. They bind with ribosomes from susceptible bacteria which will help prevent any protein production. This helps kill off all the bad bacteria over time. The only real side effect for macrolides is that they can cause your stomach to be upset, but there are no sides other than that of any serious nature.
The one problem that lies with antibiotics is the fact that bacteria can begin to resist them; however, they are usually quite effective for most people. Talk to your doctor about the different types of antibiotics that may be right for you; no matter what your illness is, there is sure to be something that can cure it!
